BDR Thermea Group residential boilers

Throughout Europe, boilers are the most popular appliance for providing domestic central heating and hot water. Boilers can be wall-hung or floor-standing. Depending on what fuel is available, they can run on natural gas, liquid petroleum gas (LPG), solid fuel, oil or electricity.

The term condensing, or high efficiency, means the boiler recovers more heat from the amount of fuel that is burnt, making it more efficient than a conventional, non-condensing (or standard efficiency) boiler.

By recovering and using heat that would otherwise be lost up the flue, the best condensing boilers are more than 90% efficient, making them more economical to run and better for the environment.

Types of residential boilers

  • Combination boilers, often known as combis, provide central heating and instant hot water so they do not need a separate water storage cylinder.

  • System and heat only boilers provide central heating and hot water via a hot water storage tank.

  • Some boilers have and integral hot water storage tank. These combination-store, or combi store, boilers are usually floor standing although wall hung models are available.
