BDR Thermea Group is a pioneer of Combined Heat and Power (CHP).  micro-CHP a low carbon alternative to traditional boilers.

Installation of micro-CHP appliances, in existing or new buildings, can be more cost-effective and less disruptive compared to other renewable and low carbon technologies, as installation and servicing relies largely on current skills required for heating installation. 

Combined heat and power (CHP), or cogeneration, is the simultaneous production of useful heat and electricity from a single source, close to the point of use. Large scale CHP, suitable for industrial and commercial applications, has been around for some time. micro-CHP refers to the small-scale production of heat and power for commercial buildings, apartments and individual homes. These units meet the demand for space heating and hot water whilst providing electricity to supplement or replace the grid supply. 

CHP generates electricity and captures usable heat that is produced in this process. This contrasts with conventional ways of generating electricity where vast amounts of heat are simply wasted. In today’s coal and gas fired power stations, up to two thirds of the overall energy consumed is lost in this way, often seen as a cloud of steam rising from cooling towers.  By using waste heat, CHP plants can reach efficiency ratings in excess of 90%. 

What are the benefits of micro-CHP?

With the ability to attain overall efficiencies above 90%, micro-CHP units meet the demand for heating, space heating and/or hot water (and potentially cooling) in buildings, while providing electricity to replace or supplement the grid supply.

Economic savings are generated for the user, by reducing imported electricity and by selling surplus electricity back to the grid, reducing energy bills by 25% to 34%.

Carbon emissions are reduced by generating electricity at the point of use - avoiding the system losses associated with central power production.  Micro-CHP can achieve annual savings of over 1.5 tonnes of carbon dioxide for a single home.

Security of supply is greatly enhanced by reducing reliance on centralised power production.

Increasingly our electricity is provided by intermittent generation, in the form of wind and solar PV. Micro-CHP helps overcome capacity shortages when the wind is not blowing or the sun not shining. Micro-CHP uses natural gas in a highly efficient way and is flexible.  Therefore it can generate electricity at times of peak power demand or capacity shortages.

Our solutions

Dachs micro-CHP is the pioneering unit delivered by BDR Thermea Group.  For over 20 years Dachs has been meeting the energy needs of single- and multi-family homes, hotels and hospitals and other commercial applications. The unit generates 5.5kW of electricity and 12.5kW of heat using an internal combustion engine.  Today over 30,000 Dachs units are delivering benefits for consumers.

Stirling engine technology is BDR Thermea Group’s choice for domestic applications, typically serving single- and two-family homes.  Remeha Evita and Baxi Ecogen provide a wall-hung heat and power solution for replacing boilers in existing homes.

InnoGen is BDR Thermea Group’s new fuel cell micro-CHP system, based on Proton Exchange Membrane (PEM) Fuel Cell technology.  The result of over a decade of research and development, the InnoGen system, fueled by natural gas, was launched in 2016 in Germany.  Delivering high electrical efficiency and flexibility, with fast start-up times and modulating output, the system is supported by the EU-sponsored ene.field and PACE programmes.

Our newly extended range of CHP now enables us to meet the needs of a wider range of applications.  In conjunction with our partners, BDR Thermea Group can supply CHP up to 2000 kWe to meet the needs of apartment blocks, leisure centres, supermarkets, care homes, hotels, office complexes, hospitals and for local district heating systems.
